James Compton is a litigator with experience in complex commercial disputes, high stakes appeals, and the defense of constitutional rights.

James handles a wide-ranging set of issues including political litigation, First Amendment challenges, and representations of those unfairly targeted by the government.

Prior to joining First and Fourteenth, James served as Counsel to United States Senator Josh Hawley. In that position, he advised the Senator on matters before the Senate Judiciary Committee, helped the Senator formulate policy, and represented the Senator’s interests in litigation. That experience is invaluable in his current practice, which involves both political litigation and challenges to federal authority.

A graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, James served as a law clerk to Judge Allison Rushing of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and Judge Thomas Cullen of the Western District of Virginia.
